On vs. In: Make a Change and Improve Your Life

We’ve all heard people say that one of the keys to a successful business is to make sure you spend as much time ON your business as you do IN your business. As a business owner, I’ve spent way too much time IN the day-to-day details of the business and not ON the direction, alliances, and resources needed to move the company forward… and I paid for it. (By the way, this also applies to your LIFE!)

So many of us wake up to a very long list of “to-do’s”, “must-do’s” and ” I have-to’s” that it’s surprising we get out of bed at all. But.. you’ve got to have the RIGHT “to-do’s” on your list. How do you do that?

Here’s a tip:

When you read over your long list of “to-do’s” ask yourself which of these will move you closer to your goals. By this, I mean living the life you want to live and the way you want to feel. Make sure these tasks get a special star or symbol to indicate that they need to be done FIRST, then if you have time, knock off the other items on your list.

We are often spending far too much time trapped within the details of life rather than on actual TASKS that will move us forward. Now is the time to make a change to improve your life rather than just “crossing something off your list.” Work on tasks that move YOUR life forward.

In work and in life, we must clearly identify the actions we take that move our lives and businesses closer to the goal line — what activities keep us at the status quo?  What activities set us back? Get rid of the ones that are setting you back. Don’t just keep these tasks, goals, and ideas in your head. You NEED to write them down and cross them off.

The Ahhh-ha!

At one point I realized that I was basing my decision as to whether a day was productive or not by the number of items I could cross off my list on any given day. I used to do 30 things every day but now, I focus only on two meaningful tasks, enabling me to do them VERY well! These concepts and actions enabled me to move my business and life forward.

Lesson learned - Ask yourself these questions:

  1. “What’s the one thing I can do to move myself or business closer to my goal?”
  2. “What’s the one thing that will generate the biggest impact on my   business/life?”

Make sure you do those things first, and if you have time, then you can do everything else on your list.

Remember, you can achieve anything if you have the RIGHT tools, the RIGHT instructions, and the RIGHT people/team around you to help you get there.

MYTH and Truth

Crossing things off our lists does not mean we are improving our lives. It means you used up a lot of your time. We all love getting things done and feeling accomplished.  Don’t be FOOLED by the small tasks like responding to emails, and texts,These are time suckers that may “Only take 5 min” but before you know it, those 5 minutes strung together takes up your entire day.

Please share the ways you stay focused on the important tasks that move you toward achieving your goals.
