Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving is that month when everyone focuses their energy on what they are thankful for. I believe we need to practice gratitude all year long, and not just as one, but as a family. One of the very best ways to really acknowledge what you are grateful for is to give to others. It may be giving all the pieces of a holiday meal to a family struggling in this difficult economy, or volunteering in a soup kitchen. I have found and hope to teach my kid’s that often times it’s not what you give; it’s how you give it. You can serve up a hot meal at a shelter and take some time to talk to the people you are serving. The hot soup is welcome but the sincere conversation will touch their soul.
Make some time to give to those around you. Get to know your neighbors and the people at your community centers. Here are some of the things we are doing on our side. 1) We have loads of stuff going to the Salvation Army and our local consignment stores (From My Sister’s Closet for my stuff, to Kid 2 Kid for the younger members of my family). Consignment shops are a great way to give someone a great deal and find one for you, too. 2) My teen will spend some of his time lending a hand at our local senior center, while my toddler and I are helping collect and post wishes for families that need some extra help this year. It’s wonderful for her to pick out another child’s wish, shop for it, and make it special for their big day. During all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, keep this Noodle Thought: The most precious gift you can give anyone is your time, and with that gift, you will receive one far greater for yourself. It’s in giving that you can truly appreciate all you have to be grateful for. Amilya
