Occupy Wall Street, Redistribution of Wealth, and the Current Economic Crisis
Sometimes to better understand something, you need to see it through a different perspective. Here’s my take on Occupy Wall Street, redistribution of wealth and what I believe needs to happen to solve our nation’s economic crisis.

You don’t get it. Those at the top within “Corporate America” are essentially winning the lottery every week while those under them are working as hard or harder in their respective positions but are struggling to keep their heads above water. Get it? Those at the top are reaping an unfair distribution of wealth based on the amount of effort expended each day. Is there something wrong when a corporate executive becomes entitled to enough income to buy hundreds of homes while others can’t afford an apartment? I think so. I don’t begrudge those at the top having a bigger slice of the pie but the current disparity is reprehensible and unreasonable. I don’t want your money or stuff but when the majority isn’t getting a fair share of income because it’s being hoarded by the rich, how does that help the economy? It doesn’t. If that money was spread out in a more equitable fashion it would be spent by the average person, NOT HOARDED and that does help the economy.
What will stimulate the economy more:
1 rich person building a yacht, employing 10 workers.
Or 100 middle class people buying 100 washing machines, employing 200 workers.
This is why the occupy movement is just, and warranted. If you want to stimulate the economy, give the money back to the people.
Another example, since its the holiday season.
One rich family (let’s say $500k/year) buys christmas presents for the whole family.
The poor family (let’s say $50k/year) buys christmas presents for the whole family too.
According to your logic, the rich family has to spend over ten times more on presents than the poor family, even if both are families of four. Highly unlikely these rich people are spending their money like this. They might spend 3 or maybe even 5 times more… But ten times seems extremely unlikely even when you consider they would probably buy more expensive gifts.
Again, get the money in the hands of the majority, and it will go further.
I hope this makes sense, I am essentially arguing for a bubble- up economy, as opposed to the trickle down system.
Best regards,
Patrick
Also, of course you don’t agree with wealth redistribution, you’re part of the 1%!!! If I were in your shoes, I can’t say I’d feel any different. But trust me, when you’re part of the 99% right now, it’s tough. We don’t have an incentive to keep things the way they are. Things change, and that’s what needs to happen here.
If I want to “redistribute” my wealth by giving something to someone of my own free will, that’s one thing, but it should not be forced on me by the government. I was fed up with the movement within a week or two, when I heard one of the protestors complain about having enormous college loan debt while bragging about her Ivy League education. Hey, I didn’t choose her school for her, and I didn’t rack up her debt. My husband and I bought a cattle ranch right out of high school, and we’ve worked hard on the ranch and in our other side businesses for almost 27 years, never expecting anyone to bail us out, even when we’ve had drought and tough times. You want to talk sacrifice and hard work? What is it with these spoiled rotten people who aren’t willing to invest in their own futures, but expect others to do it all for them?
I think that the demonstration was an outcome of the class warfare that has been politicized for the past few years. The Protestors had many sometimes even opposing issues whether real or perceived. The sad part is that as a whole they believe that the answer to all of their problems is the redistribution of wealth. It seems to me the real problem is that these individuals have lost the desire and motivation to become one percenter’s.
Those LAZY OWS people are being backed by Their President Oboma!! I do not know if you noticed or not but OBUMASS has not said one word about them at all since it started!!!! They are part of if not
all of the problem our once great nation is facing right now!!! They (OWS) can keep their COMMUNISTIC views!!! I had worked all my life from the age of 14 until I became disabled 5 Years
ago at age 50. My wife and I worked for what we have!!! Our brick home is PAID FOR 100% AND
I WILL USE WHAT EVER FORCE NEEDED TO PROTECT IT!!!!! Those LAZY SOB’s need to go to
work and stop that protesting crap!!!!! MERRY CHRISTMASS Walter
Corporations are reaping the benefits of firing full-time employees and hiring contractors of which I am one. We do not have a choice. If you want to find work quickly and easily without long term periods of unemployment you must take these jobs. You are left to fend for yourself as far as vacation and health benefits go. New laws should be passed requiring vacations for contractors and create group health plans that are affordable. Single health plans are terrible. Ocuppy Wall Street are a bunch of bums with no direction. Many people have issues with accepting other than full-time jobs and are left unemployed for long periods. It is relatively easy for me to find temp or contract work. In my opinion these are issues that should be pursued.
I agree with you totally. Instead of sitting there for moths now, they should get up and try to find a job. Bless the rich, thanks to them my husband has a job I am a teacher, and I’m unemployed!
We seem to have a lot of people who are more ready to protest than to work. To really work, they need a plan and they obviously don’t have one.
Walt: You make the mistake that pervades liberal thinking – that somehow life must be “fair.” The “top within Corporate America” by being rewarded for what they do is somehow taking from you. Nothing is preventing the “99%’ers” from realizing the same, other than the idea, skill, talent, . . . to do so. Every day there are new success stories in America – stories like Steve Jobs who started in a garage and built at one point the most highly capitalized company in the world. No, you spout “fairness” as a subterfuge for “envy.” You want what others have gained because you don’t want to work for it. Anybody can make it in America. You see people with Down’s Syndrome as successful actors, soldiers returning from war with lost limbs starting successful businesses, and all sorts of folks from humble beginnings who are now successful. This whole notion of “fairness” is such drivel. It is good that life is not fair – it rewards those of us who are productive and contribute to society.
Let me explain how the economy works because most of the occupiers studied art history and not what makes the economy tick.
Patrick above complains that the rich person can buy a yacht. It actually takes hundreds of people to make a yacht, from engine builders to fiberglassmakers to instrument makers and so on. These craftsmen then go out and buy cars housing clothing and food for their family. And this goes on and on. Meanwhile the rich guy has a company or a store that employs hundreds of more people.
The rich man does not put his earnings under his pillow he instead buys stocks and bonds etc. the sale of stocks allows other companies to grow their businesses.
Money does not sit idle!
