Jump Starters: Give Every Area in Your Life a BOOST
Definition of ‘Jump Starter’: The memories or behaviors that get you re-energized and re-committed to a topic, goal, or way of life.
We all know how it feels to be stuck in a rut. Sometimes, you just wake up and feel like you’re reliving the same day over and over again and going nowhere. I believe that most things in life will eventually need a Jump Start whether you’re dealing with a relationship, a career, or a health and fitness slump.
So the question is, how do you “jump start” your life again? For me, I begin with taking a hard look at my schedule over the past week. I ask myself which of my priorities seems to be causing the most sludge in my life. Is it my career? My relationship? My health? It’s usually the item I did not make time for that is making me feel so blah. A week out of the gym: I start to feel sloppy, I lose the pep in my step, and my eating habits quickly fall off course, all causing me to feel weighed down. When I don’t make time for the important relationships in my life, I also start to feel disconnected and lonely. Once you pinpoint the areas that seem to be neglected, you can easily create some Jump Starters. Another way to identify those areas is identifying which area is taking up the majority of your time. Cutting back on the time spent in that area will allow you to refocus and bring back balance in your life.
There are several Jump Starters that always seem to work in my life. When I feel out of sync with my “self” (mind and body), a recommitment to working out and yoga will always do the trick. The question is, “HOW?” I make a few quick calls to some friends and tell them I need some support and motivation and POOF…. they will have suggestions on a weekend yoga retreat or tell me about exciting new classes that I can take to get recommitted to my health. Also, this call for help motivates them to call me before class, save me a spot, and send me those little reminder texts that they are looking forward to seeing me.
Just as I need “Jump Starters” in my physical world, I need them even more in my mental world. Many aspects of my business are overwhelming and exhausting to say the least. Without the Jump Starters it’s easy to slow down and avoid things all together. I use picture collages behind my desk that are filled with letters and photos from people who have seen me speak, participated in one of my teleseminars, or Life by Design programs. Keeping these within sight helps me through the areas of the job that are not as fun. I love it when new things get added to the board and it puts that pep in my step.
I have learned from trial and error that I need to eat a balanced meal and enjoy a nice cup of coffee before I head into my second and most of the time, third part of my day. I used to be one that skipped meals or ate what was around because I was on the run. This mistake leaves me feeling not only emotionally down, but physically tired. I learned to ask for food to be brought into meetings or I make sure I have snacks packed for the day. It’s also important for me to recognize what my employees need to get them through their days. Recognize their Jump Starters and they will work more efficiently throughout the day too.
Every time I work on my vision board, take a workout class, or further my education on topics I want to learn about, I am using a Jump Starter to bring balance into my life.
Last, but certainly not the least, is my group of close friends. Every time we all gather for dinner or a little get together at my house, I am more than recharged. Each one of my girlfriends have amazing things going on in their lives and it makes me both proud and energized. You are who you surround yourself with and we all need support.
I encourage you to find the things in your life that excite you, make you feel like you’re living out loud, and bring a smile to your face.
Schedule those things throughout your month to keep you Jump Started in the areas of your life where you want to be the most successful in.
